Abstract

1,106,445. Preparing pelleted food from meal. RALSTON PURINA CO. 22 Nov., 1966, No. 52244/66. Heading A2B. In preparing pelleted food from meal, meal is passed from hopper 1 via a screw conveyer 7 of variable pitch, and chamber 15 in which it is mixed and conveyed by rotating paddles 25 and treated with steam under pressure, supplied through inlet 39 and discharged through outlet 41, to rotary pellet mill 35 where the meal is pressed by rotatable rollers 55 through the apertures in rotating die 57 and the extrusions are cut into pellets by knives 61. The pellets are allowed to dry or are dried. In chamber 15 substantially all the bacteria in the meal is killed without the meal being cooked. The apparatus is provided with a spring loaded check valve 9 and a rotary valve type pressure lock 31 to maintain the pressure in chamber 15. Chamber 15 may be provided with steam jacket 71.
