Abstract
A process for heat-treating a material, particularly applicable to the manufacture of cement clinker, comprises first heating the material at a temperature below 1000 DEG C. in a non-rotary furnace in which low grade solid fuel is burnt in the suspended state to provide at least part of the thermal energy requirement, and thereafter heating the material at above 1000 DEG C. in a rotary furnace. The non-rotary furnace is preferably a fluidized bed. The heat content of the gaseous and/or solid products of the rotary furnace may be exchanged with the starting material prior to treatment in the rotary furnace. The low grade solid fuel may be of coarser grain size than the starting material in which case the coarse grain slag is drawn off separately, or the low grade solid fuel may be finely divided and the finely divided slag drawn off with the flue gases and separated therefrom by means of a cyclone. In the manufacture of cement clinker the deacidification of the CaCO3 component may be at least partially effected in the non-rotary furnace and at least 30% of the energy required therefor obtained from the raw materials, the remainder of the energy requirement for deacidification being supplied by the fuel fed to the non-rotary furnace. Preferably, a pre-heater is disposed up-stream of the non-rotary furnace to which the meal of ground limestone is fed. The product of the non-rotary furnace may be adjusted to have a standard lime value of 95\sB5 before being fed to the rotary furnace.
