Abstract

1,106,316. Aerials. G. VERASTEGUI DE LIZASOAIN, R. E. MARTIN, and H. I. ONTANO. 14 April, 1966 [20 April, 1965], No. 16372/66. Heading H4A. [Also in Division H1K] An electrical conductor comprises matted fibres of electroconductive material embedded in a supporting body of dielectric plastics material which fills all the spaces between the fibres but does not adhere to them. In a first example, metal wool is combed and embedded between two sheets of uncured silicone rubber which adhere to the fibres, the resulting structure being moulded and cured at an elevated temperature sufficient to melt the rubber and destroy its adhesion to the fibres. In a second example a mass of metal wool fibres is placed in a mould into which is poured the embedding agent mixed with a catalyst and a foaming agent, the mould is capped and the contents are cured. Alternatively the embedding agent may be placed in the mould before inserting the metal wool. In a third example, a mass of metal wool is kneaded into a quantity of silicone putty. The metal wool may be sprayed with, or dipped in, a non-adhesive release agent, e.g. silicone grease, wax, or soap to prevent the embedding material from adhering to the fibres. The embedding material may also be polyurethane, P.V.C., polyethylene, or putty. It is stated that the embedding material may be a thermosetting plastic. The embedded fibres may constitute a pressure sensitive resistor. It is stated that the resistance varies with the magnitude but not the direction or sign of the applied force. Other uses are stated to be antennas, transducers, amplifiers and variable capacitors.
