Abstract

A method of bending glass plates in an arcuate fashion comprises applying a coating to at least one part of the glass surface such that the surface stress (compressive or tensile) at that part, when the glass is heated to its deformation temperature, are different from the surface stresses on the opposite surface so that the plate becomes curved, without any action of external forces, on being heated. Alternatively a diffential surface stress may be induced by leaching the glass on one side. The applied coating may have a coefficient of expansion less than that of the glass to give a concave surface. The coating may alternatively be a thin dense layer of aluminium, silicon, titanium, or their suboxides which on heating and oxidation give a convex surface. The coating may contain volatile matter, e.g. urea, camphor or ammonium chloride, which can be removed e.g. by a weak alkaline solution, thus leaving a porous layer which on heating provides a concave surface. By varying the thickness of the coating over various parts of the glass surface different radii of curvature can be obtained.ALSO:A method of bending glass plates in an arcuate fashion comprises applying a coating to at least one part of the glass surface such that the surface stress (compressive or tensile) at that part, when the glass is heated to its deformation temperature, are different from the surface stresses on the opposite surface so that the plate becomes curved, without any action of external forces, on being heated.
