Abstract

Novel compounds of the formula <FORM:1105999/C2/1> in which R represents a hydrogen atom or a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group and R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an acyl group of an organic carboxylic acid, are obtained in a process wherein a compound of the formula <FORM:1105999/C2/2> wherein R and R1 are as defined above, is dehydrogenated in the 4,5-position and, if desired, in the resulting compound any free 17-OH group is acylated or any 17-acyloxy group is saponified. Dehydrogenation may be effected with SeO2, quinones, or by halogenation followed by dehydrohalogenation.
