Abstract

1,105,244. Microprogramme interruption. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 12 Oct., 1965 [4 Sept., 1964; 19 Aug., 1965] Nos. 36434/64 and 35699/65. Heading G4A. An electric digital computer with microprogramme store has provision for interrupting a microprogramme to transfer data between the computer store and external equipment. The invention is described as applied to the computer disclosed in Specification 1,105,245, in which main programme orders include a portion for addressing micro-programmes in a pre-programmed (by plugboard) microprogramme store. On receiving an interrupt call (which is effective at the end of the second phase of the current micro-order) the microprogramme selection is inhibited, the next micro-order address is transferred from the order register to a holding register, said micro-programme inhibition is released, the (wired-in) address of a microprogramme order for controlling said transfer of data is placed in the order register and after processing of this order the address of said next micro-order is returned from said holding register to said order register so that the interrupted programme may continue. The address in store to which the data is to be transferred may be set initially in a special register SR. The invention may be applied to magnetic drum stores where, after addressing the drum, programming is continued until the required address is reached when an interrupt signal is generated. The arrangement is such that transfer-in interrupt requests take priority over transfer-out interrupt requests.
