Abstract

1,104,957. Ignition generators. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 2 Aug., 1965 [12 Oct., 1964], No. 32926/65. Heading H2A. [Also in Division F1] The distributer housing of an internal combustion engine includes a permanent magnet electrical generator whose output is connected to a transistor circuit for providing the required H.T. supply to the sparking plugs, Fig. 1 (not shown). The generator has an annular permanent magnet 123, of barium titanate, secured between plates 131, 132 together with an annular magnetic shunt 124 and annular output coil 63 which is enclosed in plastics bobbin 126. The outer ends of plates 131, 132 are notched and bent to provide spaced apart, radially aligned polepieces 141, 142, the polepieces 141 being peripherally shorter than inner polepieces 142. Rotor 145, of magnetic material has poles 147 bent down to lie between the polepieces 141, 142 and these poles are further twisted so that the leading edge lies close to polepieces 142 and the trailing edge adjacent to polepieces 141, Fig. 5 (not shown). An air gap 148 is provided between the annular shunt 124 and plate 132 so that the flux linking output coil 63 changes cyclically when poles 147 of the rotor move in and out of alignment with stator polepieces 141, 142 thus generating a time varying voltage which is applied to the circuit of Fig. 1, to produce the required H.T. supply to the sparking plugs. The number of cooperating poles and polepieces is equal to the number of cylinders in the I.C. engine. Post 161 which is rigidly attached to rotor 145 carries a normal distributer arm 171, and is angularly movable relative to the drive shaft 115 by a weight operated, centrifugal advance mechanism, Fig. 2 and 3 (not shown). The stator structure 122 is mounted on bushing 134 and can be angularly displaced by a standard vacuum advance mechanism 177, Fig. 2 (not shown). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 962,770.
