Abstract

An anticorrosive priming composition comprises a cation exchange resin or resins in the hydrogen form and lead oxide in a weight ratio of 1-2 parts of resin per part of lead oxide in a binder which is unsaponifiable or forms lead soaps to only a negligible extent. The binder may be (a) a solution of 1-2 parts of vinyl chloride vinyl acetate copolymer to 1 part of varnish asphalt; (b) a solution of 1-3 parts of vinyl chloride vinyl acetate copolymer, 1 part of furfuryl alcohol resin and 0.1-0.2 part of polyvinylbutyral; or (c) a solution of 1-2 parts of vinyl chloride vinyl acetate copolymer, 1 part of asphalt and 0.1-0.2 part of polyvinylbutyral. The composition may also contain dibutylphthalate and phosphoric acid. The specified cation exchange resin is a polycondensate of formaldehyde with phenol- and naphthalene-sulphonic acids. Solvents used are methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, toluene, xylene, ethanol and butyl acetate.
