Abstract
Mineral values (e.g. stronianite and monozite) are separated from carbonatite ore which comprises at least 50% of carbonatite ores which are decomposed at 1000 DEG C. in which mineral granules of at least 10 microns are embedded by calcining the ore at 900-1000 DEG C., quenching the calcine in water and subjecting the slurry of calcination product in water to attrition scrubbing to separate the mineral values from the fine hydroxide suspension. A sand fraction is obtained which contains the mineral values present in the original ore in substantially their original sizes. The slurry which is subjected to attrition scrubbing may contain 50% by weight of solids. The sand fraction may be subjected to magnetic separation. A modification of the process involves separation of two or more mineral values having different decomposition temperatures above 1000 DEG C. by first calcining at 900-1000 DEG C. and separating a sand fraction as above. A second roasting of the sand fraction follows at higher temperature to decompose the least stable material. The latter process is particularly suitable for separating stronianite and monozite from ferruginous dolomite as mined in Kangankunde Hill, Malawi.
