Abstract

1,104,379. Moulding road markers &c. BECK KOLLER & CO. (ENGLAND) Ltd. 16 Aug., 1965 [22 Aug., 1964; 2 Oct., 1964 (2)], No. 35034/65. Heading B5A. [Also in Division E1] Light reflective and refractive beads, e.g. of glass, and particles smaller than the beads, and which may themselves comprise glass beads, are embedded in a plastics material by moulding, and the surface of the moulded blank is treated with a liquid or gaseous agent which affects the plastics material and, possibly, the smaller particles, enabling the surface to be removed to allow the larger beads to protrude. Each bead protrudes an amount sufficient to display at least one quarter of its surface. The smaller particles, which may be soluble in the agent, may be of rock, sand or ground mica, and the plastics material may comprise a polyester mixture including titanium dioxide, methylethyl ketone peroxide and a cobalt naphtenate solution; the liquid agent may comprise methylene chloride. As described, a mould 8, Fig. 13, is first supplied with a layer 9 of polyester mixture; after this layer has set a similar resin mixed with glass beads of varying sizes is applied to the layer 9 to provide a second layer 6, and finally a layer 10 of a similar resin is applied. After solidification, the moulding is immersed in methylene chloride, after which the plastics layer at the surface 5 is removed by brushing. The mouldings may be used for road markers, sign boards, building coverings &c.
