Abstract

Unsaturated polyesters are made by reacting (a) maleic anhydride with (b) 2,4-dimethyl-2-ethyl - 1,3 - hexanediol or 2,2,4 - trimethyl - 1,3-pentanediol. The polyesters may be dissolved in unsaturated monomers (e.g. styrene, vinyl toluene, methyl methacrylate, diallyl phthalate, triallyl cyanurate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride or a mixture of styrene and methyl methacrylate) and the solution catalysed with a free-radical catalyst (e.g. benzoyl peroxide or a mixture of M.E.K. peroxide and cobalt naphthenate). Fillers (e.g. asbestos, calcium carbonate, silica, wood flour, chopped paper, marble sand or clay) or viscosity control agents (e.g. colloidal silica) may be added. The solutions may be used as coating compositions, adhesives or binders for the manufacture of glass fibre laminates.ALSO:Wood, earthenware, steel, aluminium, glass fibre boats, plastics (e.g. vinyl flooring), or concrete, asbestos, building blocks made from cinder, concrete or cement are coated with a composition which comprises a mixture of (1) an unsaturated polyester made by reacting maleic anhydride and 2,4-dimethyl-2-ethyl-1,3-hexanediol or 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (2) a vinyl monomer (e.g. styrene, vinyl toluene, methyl methacrylate, diallyl phthalate, triallyl cyanurate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride or a mixture of styrene and methyl methacrylate) (3) a free-radical catalyst and, possibly, (4) colloidal silica as a viscosity control agent. The composition may be applied by spraying, hand lay-up or blade coating.
