Abstract

Polytetrafluoroethylene films and sheets having planar orientation, as characterized by an A X-ray ratio of 1 to 0.4 and a B X-ray ratio of 0.7 to 0.05, and having a melting point above 340 DEG C., may be produced by (a) passing the charge through the nip of at least one pair of heated nip rolls to form a flat sheet; (b) folding the sheet so formed back on itself in the direction of rolling; (c) passing the folded sheet through the nip of at least one pair of heated nip rolls in a direction of from 30 to 90 degrees transverse to the previous rolling direction; and (d) repeating steps (b) and (c) a sufficient number of times to obtain a final sheet or film of the desired thickness and orientation and to impart to the sheet or film a melting point above 340 DEG C., at least the final rollings being conducted through rolls maintained at a temperature of at least 50 DEG C. The rolls may be maintained at a temperature of at least 120 DEG C. during the final rollings. The sheet or film finally produced may be treated at a temperature below the melting point of the sheet or film and not higher than 340 DEG C. to prevent subsequent delamination of the sheet. The particulate polymer may be blended with up to 90% by volume of a particulate solid filler prior to being hot rolled. The blending may be effected in the presence of a volatilizable hydrocarbon liquid (which in this case functions as a lubricant) to form a slurry from which most of the hydrocarbon liquid is filtered off. The filler may be a substance which can be dissolved out of the final sheet or film by means of a solvent for the filler but not for the polymer so that the final film or sheet is thereby rendered porous. The filler may be finely divided sodium chloride and the salt and the particulate polymer may be mixed in the presence of four volumes of Stoddard solvent which is then filtered off from the mixture. The final sheet or film may then be leached in warm water containing a detergent for several days to dissolve out the salt and subsequently washed with hot water containing a detergent.
