Abstract

A hydrocyanation process for introducing a cyano group into an a b -unsaturated carbonyl compound or an equivalent active compound selected from b -hydroxy-, b -amino, and b -mercapto carbonyl compounds or a vinylog thereof, at the carbon atom of the b -position or the vinylogous position, which comprises using an alkylcyanoaluminium compound as the sole hydrocyanation agent. The alkylcyanoaluminium compound may be represented by the formula RR1AlCN wherein R is a lower alkyl group or a lower alkoxy group, R1 is a lower alkyl group, lower alkoxy group, a halogen atom, or cyano group. As a b -unsaturated carbonyl compound there may be used aliphatic, cyclic and heterocyclic ketones, aldehydes, carboxylic acids and esters thereof.
