A vibrating centrifuge having a divergent centrifuge basket is vibrated torsionally instead of in the direction of the axis of rotation. As shown, a flywheel 34 is mounted on the basket shaft 11 and has rotatable on it two planet gears 36 each carrying an out-ofbalance weight, the eccentricities being disposed at 180‹ to each other. The gears 36 mesh with a sun wheel 37 concentric with shaft 11 and rotated through a belt and pulley 41, 40 by a variable speed motor, (not shown), separate from the basket drive 17 to 19. In another embodiment the shaft 11 carries, beyond the flywheel, a laminated rotor, surrounded by a stator wound to produce poles of alternate polyarity, providing a magnetic field with localities of maximum magnetic intensity. The stator is fed either by D.C. to produce a stationary magnetic field, or by polyphase A.C. to produce a field which rotates, preferably in a direction opposite to that of the shaft. In a further embodiment, a casing containing liquid is secured to the rear face of the flywheel and has inwardly extending radial vanes. A rotor, with outwardly extending vanes just clearing the former ones, is journalled in the end of shaft 11 and is rotated by a belt and pulley to provide hydraulic torsional vibration.
