Abstract
In freeze-drying tanned leather, e.g. a tanned skin, the leather is stretched over a first polished surface and covered with a fluid-tight cover, the pressure of air in the space between the surface and cover is reduced and the surface is cooled to a temperature below 0 DEG C., e.g. to -25 DEG C., to freeze the water in the leather. The pressure in said space is then brought to normal atmospheric pressure, the leather is uncovered and the resulting stiff sheet of frozen leather is removed from the surface and transferred on to a second polished surface, at such a speed that the frozen water in the leather has no time to melt. The pressure of the air in the space between said second surface and cover is then reduced and the second surface is heated, e.g. to a temperature between 65 and 90 DEG C., to sublime said frozen water. The pressure in the second space is brought to normal atmospheric pressure and the dried leather is uncovered and removed from the second surface. Preferably, each cover has, on its inner surface, a flexible cushion, which is permeable to air and water-vapour. The pressure in said spaces may be reduced by applying suction through the cushions. Vacuum-drying apparatus disclosed in French Specification 1,460,696 may be used.
