Abstract
Gas-inflatable plastic particles are made by forming a solution of a normally solid thermoplastic resin and a solid, thermally stable substance capable of giving off a gas by simple chemical reaction with a diffusant, the solvent being inert with respect to the resin and the gas generator, and converting the solution into a multiplicity of plastic particles containing the unchanged gas generator therein, and ranging in ultimate particle diameter from 0.1 to 100 microns. Specified plastic materials are polyvinyl alcohol and acetate, cellulose esters, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene. The gas generator may suitably be Al3C4, used with water, or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal carbonate or bicarbonate used with an acid diffusant. Alternatively a solid acidic substance, e.g. an organic acid or anhydride, a pyrosulphite, pyrosulphate, bisulphite, bisulphate or acidic phosphate may be encapsulated with a carbonate or bicarbonate, with water being used as diffusant.ALSO:A slimming aid comprises a wafer containing plastic microbeads bound by edible gelatin. These plastic beads are permeable to aqueous acid, and contain a substance which will react with acid to give a gas, e.g. a bicarbonate when swallowed, these will inflate by the action of stomach acid and thus counteract hunger pangs. The exemplified plastic (Example 2) is polyvinyl alcohol.ALSO:Gas-inflatable plastic particles are made by forming a solution of a normally solid thermoplastic resin and a solid, thermally stable substance capable of giving off a gas by simple chemical reaction with a diffusant, the solvent being inert with respect to the resin and the gas generator, and converting the solution into a multiplicity of plastic particles containing the unchanged gas generator therein, and ranging in ultimate particle diameter from 0.1 to 100 microns. Alternatively a solid acidic substance, e.g. an organic acid or anhydride, a pyrosulphite, pyrosulphate, bisulphite, bisulphate or acidic phosphate may be encapsulated with a carbonate or bicarbonate, with water being used as diffusant. These inflatable particles may be used as insulating coating compositions and may be applied by spraying, dipping or brushing. In Example 6 polystyrene beads containing Al4C3 are sprayed onto steel piping, and water vapour permeating the polymer reacts to generate methane, thus forming a heat-insulating inflated plastics coating. The coating may be heated to increase the permeability of the polymer.
