Abstract
A method of making spheres or spheroids of alloys of Ru, Rh, Ir or Os comprises heating the pure refractory metal in the form of a fine powder with a matrix mixture of Pd or Pt and Au and/or Ag to melt the matrix mixture but not the refractory metal, the dispersion so formed then being cooled and leached (e.g. with aqua regia) to give the spheres or spheroids. Except in the case of Rh and Au and/or Ag may be partially or wholly replaced by Cu. The refractory metal may be compacted with or without sintering (e.g. at 800 DEG C. to 1600 DEG C.) followed by infiltration of the matrix metal (e.g. at 1000 DEG C. to 1600 DEG C. Preferably powders of the refractory metal and the matrix mixture are mixed compacted and heated.
