Abstract
1,103,166. Coating apparatus. QUICKFIT & QUARTZ Ltd., R. A. BUTTERY and T. TURNBULL. 17, May, 1965 [10, June, 1964], No. 24166/64. Heading B2L. Apparatus for maintaining a plurality of juxtaposed plates in co-planar relationship for coating, comprises movable locating members 8 for engaging marginal portions of the upper planar surface of each of a plurality of plates 6, opposed resilient means 5 for supporting the plates and ancillary means for causing the guide members 8 to sandwich the plates 6 against the resilient means 5 under pressure at the marginal portions, to maintain the upper planar surfaces in co-planar relationship. As shown the locating members 8 are U-shaped having one arm longer than the other, the longer being pivotally connected at 21 to a number of transverse members 17. Each member 17 has associated therewith a cam 13 fixed to shaft 11. In operation with the cams 13 in the position shown in Fig. 3 (not shown) plates 6 are positioned on the resilient means 5 which may consist of two parallel strips of polyurethane foam or foam rubber. The members 8 are then pivoted into their operative position and the shaft 11 turned through 180‹ to Fig. 2 position so that the members 8 press down on the marginal portions of plates 6 such that their upper surfaces are in register. After coating the members 8 are released and the plates removed. In an alternative embodiment the two guide members 8 are mounted on overhead transverse members which are pivoted at one side of the apparatus and may be locked in a horizontal position by locking means on the other side. In another embodiment two spindles are used to raise and lower the members 8, there being a suitable arrangement of cams so that on rotation of one of the spindles both spindles lift the members 8 upwardly and outwardly from the plates 6.
