Abstract
1,103,043. Interferometers. M. CHRIST [trading as MARTIN CHRIST, FABRIK ELEKTROMEDIZINSCHER APPARATE]. March 16, 1965 [March 19, 1964], No.11054/65. Heading G2J. Optical apparatus comprising a light-source 1, a slit 2, a measuring cell 4, a lens 6 arranged to form an image of the slit, further includes a system for producing interference fringes, which consists of a polarizing prism 12 and a first polarizing filter 13 disposed in that order between the measuring cell 4 and the image plane 7 of the apparatus, and a second polarizing filter 9 crossed with the filter 13 and disposed between the lightsource 1 and the prism 12. When the cell 4 contains a medium whose refractive index Á varies across the light-path through the cell the interference fringes set up in the image plane constitute a direct image of the Gaussian distribution curve dÁ/dx/x of the spatial derivative of the refractive index Á across the light-path. The polarizing elements may be mounted in a common rotatable frame. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 a second polarizing prism 10 is provided between the filters 9, 13. The prism 12 and filter 9 are mounted in a rotatable frame 8 and the prism 10 and filter 13 are mounted in a second rotatable frame 11. In a further embodiment the measuring cell is positioned in a collimated beam of light. A cylindrical lens may be inserted between the filter 13 and the image plane 7 with its axis perpendicular to the slit 2.
