The electrolyte in an electrolytic capacitor consists of sodium formate dissolved in from 5 to 70% by weight ethylene glycol monomethyl ether and 30 to 95% of a compatible solvent, e.g. dimethyl formamide, propylene carbonate, gamma butyrolactone, ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol. In the case of aluminium electrodes, the tolerable water content is less than 1%.
