Abstract

1,102,379. Variable-throw cranks. J. S. HOLTON. 16 Jan., 1967 [20 Oct., 1965], No. 44358/65. Heading F2K. A variable throw crank mechanism for a bicycle causes a pedal (not shown), mounted at 22 on one end of a lever 11 pivoted intermediate its ends at 12 to the crankpin of a driven crank 10 having an axis of rotation 13, to follow a circular arc downward stroke and a substantially elliptical return path. The other end of the lever 11 carries a pin 18 which projects from both sides of the lever to engage slots 19, 20 in similar links 14, 15 which are pivoted to support structure at 16, 17 respectively. During the downward stroke, a pin 21 through the lever 11 engages arcuate end surfaces of the links 14, 15 and the lever 11 and crank 10 pivot as a unit about the axis 13 until the pin 21 engages a projection 15a of the link 15. The pin 18 then moves to the other end 19b of slot 19 and returns to the first end 19a thereof, while remaining at the outer end of slot 20, the pin 18 engaging the lower surface of a fixed cam 23 during the latter part of this movement. When the pin has rounded the rear end of cam 23, it moves to the inner end 20b of slot 20 and out again, remaining simultaneously at the outer end 19a of slot 19, and being guided by the upper surface of cam 23, until the lever 11 reaches the position, shown in full lines, at the start of the next downstroke, the crank 10 then having completed one revolution. The mechanism is duplicated for the other pedal.
