Abstract
<PICT:1102328/C1/1> In the manufacture of cathode-ray tubes having separable funnel and face panel portions, a device for applying a bead 17 to the sealing edge 19 of the funnel 21 comprises a support 27 for the funnel 21 mounted for rotation on a turntable 35 rotated by belt 37 from electric motor 32, a frit dispensing means 15 mounted to hold the orifice 33 in predetermined relation to the sealing edge 19, a cam follower 47 fixed to the dispensing means and arranged to contact the funnel adjacent to the sealing edge, either inside as shown or outside, so as to guide the dispensing means 15 along the sealing edge 19 and means 91 for controlling the speed of the motor 32 so as to provide a substantially uniform rate of movement of the edge 19 relative to the orifice 33 of the frit dispensing means 15. The frit dispensing means 15, cam follower 47 and speed control means 91 are mounted on a support table 71 which can be raised or lowered by the piston-rod 70 of an air cylinder 41 to bring the orifice 33 out of or into the operative level relative to the sealing edge 19. The frit dispenser 15 and cam follower 47 are also mounted for horizontal reciprocating movement through an intermediate support 38 sliding on guide rods 53, fixed to table 71, by means of members 55. A weight 45 holds the support 38 so that in operative position the cam follower 47 is positively held against the surface of the funnel 21. An air cylinder 43 presses with its piston 44 against a stop plate 65 on the support 38 to move the support 38 so that the orifice 33 is directly over the sealing edge 19, the table 71 then being lowered so that the orifice 33 is in the dot-dash position shown and the cam follower 47 engages the inner edge of the funnel. When the funnel is of non-circular shape, the follower 47, pulled by weight 45, moves in and out therewith, thus moving the support 38. This movement is transmitted to the speed control means 91, such as a rheostat, and thence to the motor 32, by a friction tyre 97 on a wheel 95 on the shaft of the rheostat which engages a friction plate 101 on the support 38. The support 27 for the funnel 21 has a removable cap 73, which has a seating portion 25 to fit the particular shape of the yoke area 23 of the funnel, held by cap screws 79 in support legs 81, spacers 83 being inserted as necessary to bring the edge 19 to the required spacing from the orifice 33 in its operative position. Clamps 85, 87 hold the neck 24 of the funnel and are adjusted by knobs 88 to align the funnel 21 correctly.
