Abstract

1,102,281. Spray-producers. BROUGHTON CORPORATION. 8 April, 1965 [22 April, 1964], No. 14946/65. Heading B2F. In a spray shower assembly for a paper making machine the white solid-bearing water issues from nozzles 30 arranged along a spray tube 10 after passing through strainers 13 and a supply conduit 11. The latter incorporates a valve 14 having a diaphragm 16 forming a water passage therethrough of varying diameter. This diameter is changed through the operation of a compressed air system which through actuation of a manual control valve 22 or an automatically controlled valve 23 allows the pressure of air surrounding the diaphragm to build up or decrease. Normally the air pressure is high but when it is desired to clean the nozzles 30 by blowing therethrough any accumulated solids, this pressure is decreased thereby allowing the full pressure of the white water supply to reach the spray tube 10. In order to effect such cleaning each nozzle incorporates a rubber nozzle defining disc 42 having a slit 46 and walls surmounting the slit such that liquid issuing therethrough is shaped into a thin fan shaped spray. In plan view, Fig. 3, not shown, the walls form two adjoining ellipses. In a modification, Fig. 5, not shown, a liquid filled vertical conduit 60 extends from each nozzle into the tube 10 such that any pressure variation on the valve diaphragm 16 has instant repercussion at the nozzle. In yet a further embodiment valve arrangements are such that cleaning of the nozzles is effected by blowing air through the spray tube 10 whilst the white water supply is shut-off.
