110,202. Automatic Printing Machine s, Ltd., (Harris Automatic Press Co.). Oct. 16, 1916. Sheet-registering devices; carriers and forwarders.- Relates to means for registering sheets against a side stop or gauge as they are being advanced to front stops against which they are also registered. In the arrangement shown, the sheets 12 are advanced from a table 13 by a feeder 15 &c. to a series of forwarding-rollers 18, 20 projecting through slots 19 in a table 16. The foremost roller 20 is mounted so that it may be moved endways while it is rotated by the gears 28, 29 This movement is imparted to it by a lever 21 operated by a cam 26 on a shaft 27 driven by gearing 59 &c. from the cylinder 57 of the printing &c. machine. By this endways movement of the roller 20, the sheets 12 as they advance are carried laterally against the side gauge 39 which is normally stationary. The sheets are pressed against the roller 20, and also against the rollers 18 if desired, by balls 38 which rest freely on the rollers, being confined in conical or cylindrical pockets 37 formed in carriers 30 extending longitudinally above the table 16. The balls may be readily changed for others of different weight, according to the thickness or quality of the paper sheets. The front stops 41 are moved laterally simultaneously with the roller 20 by an extension 43 from the shaft 42 on which they are carried. The shaft 42 is rocked to raise the front stops by an arm 51 operated by an arm 53 on a rock shaft 44, and the gauge 39 is also withdrawn from the edge of the sheet while it is fed off, by means of a wedge-arm 48, on the shaft 44, engaging a pin 49 on the rod 40 which carries the gauge. When thin paper is being fed, it is desirable to lift the balls from the rollers while the sheet is fed off. This is effected, as shown, by mounting the ball carriers 30, 31 on pairs of depending swing arms 32, 34 and 33, 35, and rocking the pivot shaft 36 of the arms 34, 35 by means of an arm 54 and a cam 55 on the rock shaft 44. The balls 38 on the roller 20 may be in pairs and placed so as to crimp or bend the sheet 12 where it is moved against the side gauge, as shown in Fig. 8.
