Abstract

A method of treating a particulate material other than a mixture of sand and lime only (which forms the subject-matter of the parent patent) comprises subjecting the particles thereof to at least three successive impacts at intervals between successive impacts of not more than 0.05 seconds and at a relative impact velocity of at least 15 metres per second. The material, which may include water, may be sand, lime, hydraulic cement, a mixture of sand and hydraulic cement, a metalliferous ore, cinders, ashes, loess or pozzolana. The separate substances may be mixed and subjected to the impacting treatment. Many examples are described. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a disintegrator having impact bars 6 mounted on counter-rotating plates 1, 3 secured to elements 5, 7 the shaft 8 of one of which is mounted on a stationary frame 2 and the shaft 9 of the other of which is mounted on a frame 4 movable by a pneumatic cylinder 16. The bars 6 may be circular, rectangular, triangular or plate-shaped in crosssection. The plates 1, 3 and elements 5, 7 are incorporated in a housing consisting of a body 18, a top cover 19 and an end cover 20. The cover 19 can be opened or closed about an articulated joint 22. Fig. 2, by operating a fluid-pressure cylinder 21. Formulae are quoted for (a) the spacing of the bars of the bar circles in relation to each other and (b) the speed of rotation of a bar circle.
