Abstract

The invention comprises a linear amino polyamide acid of inherent viscosity at least 0.1 decilitre per gram when measured at 30 DEG C. consisting of recurring units of formula <FORM:1101641/C3/1> where the 4 valencies of R are in 2 pairs the members of each pair being on adjacent carbon atoms in R or atoms separated by one further carbon atom and R1 is aromatic or cycloaliphatic, its 4 valencies being in 2 pairs, the members of each pair being ortho or peri to each other. R may be aromatic or cycloaliphatic in which case its valencies are in 2 pairs, the members of each pair being mutually ortho or peri. Dianhydrides specified include: pyromellitic dianhydride, naphthalene-2,3,6,7-tetracarboxylic dianhydride, diphenyl-3,31,4,41-tetracarboxylic dianhydride, bis(3,4 - dicarboxyphenyl)ether dianhydride, bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)sulphone dianhydride, bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)methane dianhydride, benzophenone - 3,31,4,41 - tetracarboxylic dianhydride, and a compound of formula <FORM:1101641/C3/2> Amines specified include 3,31-diaminobenzidine, bis(3,4-diaminophenyl)methane, 1,2-bis(3,4-diaminophenyl)ethane, 2,2 - bis(3,4 - diaminophenyl)propane, bis(3,4 - diaminophenyl)ether, bis(3,4 - diaminophenyl)sulphide, bis(3,4 - diaminophenyl)sulphone, 1,2,4,5 - tetra-aminobenzene and 2,3,6,7-tetra-amino-naphthalene. Solvents specified include nitrobenzene, dimethylacetamide, polyphosphoric acid and dimethyl sulphoxide. The reaction may be carried out under anhydrous conditions using equimolecular proportions of reactants. Fillers, pigments, electrical conductors, e.g. carbon black and metal particles, blowing agents, abrasives, di-electrics and lubricating polymers may be added before shaping the polymer or after-shaping to the polymer surface. The polymer may also be foamed by passing air, CO2 or N2 into a melt or solution of it. On heating the polyamide at 150 DEG C. or higher a heterocyclic polymer of repeating unit: <FORM:1101641/C3/3> is obtained. The reaction may be carried out under vacuum or under an inert gas current. The polymers may be used as sheets, fibres, foam, tube, rod or discs or coated on to a substrate.
