Abstract

1,101,285. Offshore drilling vessel. READING & BATES OFFSHORE DRILLING CO. 6 July, 1965, No. 28606/65. Heading B7A. [Also in Division E1] A catamaran type offshore drilling vessel 30, comprises two substantially identical hulls 31, 32 rigidly secured together in spaced catamaran relationship. The drilling platform 37 is supported above the sterns of each hull and extends transversely across the space between them. For good stability with rigidity the two hulls are spaced apart a distance less than the beam width of one of the hulls. Pipe racks 53 are supported midships by decks 70 of both hulls and towards the bows deck houses 54 support a flat platform 58 for landing of helicopters. In another embodiment the drilling platform is situated midships and the pipe racks extend substantially the full length of the vessel. The drilling vessel may be either self-propelled or towed and the drilling rig may have a pivotally mounted derrick which may be lowered on passage.
