Abstract
Compositions comprise (a) a chlorinated linear polyethylene containing 25 to 40 weight per cent chlorine, having a glass transition temperature no higher than 10 DEG C., having an intrinsic viscosity of 1.0 to 2.0 dl./gm. and having a crystallinity no greater than 10%, and (b) a minor proportion of a chlorinated linear polyethylene containing 30 to 45 weight per cent of chlorine, having a glass transition temperature no higher than 5 DEG C., having an intrinsic viscosity of 3.5 to 4.8 dl./gm. and having a crystallinity no greater than 1% said intrinsic viscosities being determined in 0-dichlorobenzene at 100 DEG C. and said crystallinities being determined by the substantial absence of an endothermal differential thermal analysis peak at about the melting point of the parent polyethylene. Component (b) may comprise 5 to 25 weight per cent of the total resin, and the compositions may also comprise fillers, e.g. silica, silicates, infusorial earth, pumice, rock or asbestos powder, silicon carbide, alkaline earth metal sulphates, coal, graphite, cryolite, asbestos and textile fibres, sand, kaolin, calcium carbonate and ash; pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide, carbon black, antimony trioxide, iron oxides and phthalocyanines; and stabilizers, e.g. epoxidized esters, 2,6-di-t.-butyl-4-methyl phenol, pentaerythritol, barium and cadmium soaps and alkylaryl phosphites; and may be made into plastic membranes and sandwiches and laminates thereof with scrim, for use in roof constructions.
