In apparatus for giving warning of the close proximity of an overhead high voltage power supply line, an alarm sounds when the instantaneous potential difference between two probes exceeds a predetermined value. As shown, two probes 1 and 2 are connected through respective two stage transistor amplifiers 3, 4, having emitter follower outputs, and resistors 5, 6 to respective ends of a primary winding of a transformer 7, the secondary winding of which is connected through a two-stage transistor amplifier 8 with adjustable feedback 9 to a close tolerance relay 10 which in turn is connected to a heavy duty relay (not shown) to control an alarm bell 11. A test oscillator 12 can inject a test signal into amplifier 3. Warning of failure may be provided by relays (not shown) that operate if the mains current taken rises above or falls below a predetermined range of values. A small voltage proportional to the potential of each probe may be fed directly to amplifier 8 so that warning may be given even if the two probes are equidistant from the power line. The probes may be flat circular plates, cylinders or spheres. A loudspeaker alarm may replace the bell 11.
