Abstract

A powdered copolymer for use in cement compositions (see Division C1) consists of at least 66% by wt. of units derived from vinylidene chloride, 0.5-4% derived from an acidic component (i) consisting of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, anhydride or partial ester thereof, and 4-30% derived from a component (ii) comprising at least one monoethylenically unsaturated compound co-polymerizable with vinylidene chloride other than (i). The acidic component (i) is preferably acrylic or methacrylic acid and the component (ii) may be acrylonitrile or a C1-C6 alkyl acrylate. Polymerization may be carried out in aqueous medium preferably in the absence of any dispersing agent but up to 0.5% by wt. based on the weight of the monomers, of an ionic surface-active agent and up to 1.5% of a non-ionic surface-active agent may be used. Exemplified surface-active agents are alkali metal salts of sulphated or sulphonated alcohols containing more than 12 carbon atoms and, polyoxyethylated carboxylic acid esters of sorbitan and polyoxyethylated alcohols and phenols. In an example ammonium persulphate and sodium metabisulphite were present during polymerization. The latex was spray dried to form a powder.ALSO:A cement composition comprises an hydraulic cement, e.g Portland or plaster of Paris, and from 5 to 40% by weight, based on the weight of the cement, of a copolymer in powder form, containing at least 66% by weight of units derived from vinylidene chloride, 0.5 to 4% units derived from an acidic component (i) consisting of at least one mono ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, anhydride or partial ester thereof, and from 4 to 30% units derived from a component (ii) comprising at least one monoethylenically unsaturated compound copolymerizable with vinylidene chloride, other than (i). The acidic component (i) may be acrylic or methacrylic acid and the component (ii) may be acrylonitrile or a C1-C6 alkyl acrylate. Aggregates such as sand, lime, or gravel may be present in the composition.
