Abstract
A grafted styrene polymer is produced by irradiating a pulverulent or granular styrene polymer with ionizing radiation and either contacting the irradiated polymer with a monomer which is a conjugated diene or a derivative thereof either alone or mixed with a vinyl or vinylidene monomer or contacting the irradiated polymer with a solution of said monomer or monomers under conditions in which the styrene polymer is swelled but the pulverulent or granular form of said polymer is not destroyed. The styrene polymer is derived predominantly from styrene or a nuclearly or side-chain substituted styrene. Suitable dienes are 1,3-butadiene, isoprene and chloroprene. Specified graft comonomers are styrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, methacrylate esters, vinyl formate, vinyl stearate and vinylidene chloride. In examples, the polymers are irradiated prior to immersion in monomer solutions, the components being as follows: (1) polystyrene and butadiene, (2) polystyrene, butadiene and styrene, (3) styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer, butadiene and styrene, (6) styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer, isoprene and styrene and (7) styrene/alpha-methyl styrene copolyner, butadiene and styrene. The graft polymer produced in Example 3 is blended with styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer in Example 4 and the graft polymer produced in Example 2 is blended with SBR rubber in Example 5.
