The hardness of water is determined by admitting a predetermined dose of soap liquor into a sample of water so that if the water is not hard a froth forms on its surface thereby allowing a direct current to flow through the froth between a pair of electrodes (21, 22) to actuate relays to energize an appropriate indicator light (25) or (26) and may energize a sound signal and control a water boiler. Compressed air from nozzles (16) or a rotary stirrer may agitate the water to assist frothing. One or both electrodes may be above the level of the water. A water inlet valve (7) can deliver water faster than it can escape through an overflow (3) in order to rinse the vessel. An upper overflow (2) is provided at a level above the zone of froth formation. A programmer (P) may automatically control the various steps of admitting water and soap liquor and rinsing.
