Abstract

<PICT:1100862/C4-C5/1> A reactor for a liquids-solids-gaseous reaction of the kind wherein the liquid and gas pass upwards through the solid to cause an expansion of the solids of at least 10% based on the settled volume thereof, and wherein the solids are maintained in random motion in the liquid without substantial carry-over from the reactor, which reactor comprises a substantially vertical vessel adapted to contain said solids, a perforated plate in the vessel below said solids, means to feed gas and liquid below the perforated plate and through the perforations in the plate at a velocity to maintain said solids in random motion in the liquid, an outlet for vapour and a separate outlet for liquid in the upper part of the vessel, the outlet for liquid being disposed below the outlet for vapour, and covering elements superposed over all of the perforations in the plate, the covering elements being adapted to distribute the liquid-gas mixture substantially uniformly across the horizontal cross-section of the reactor. The covering element may be a bubble-cap having a perforated edge. In one construction each hole in the plate 118 is provided with a riser 124 to which is secured a cap 130, and a downwards extension 144, 156 containing a ball valve 150 to prevent downwards flow of solids and restrict downwards flow of liquids. The downwards extension also has slots 158 to allow gas trapped under plate 118 to pass upwards through the vale and riser assembly.
