Abstract
1,100,742. Winding wire mesh. ENTWICKLUNGS - u. VERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. 24 Oct., 1966 [19 Nov., 1965], No. 47691/66. Heading B3E. Apparatus for coiling wire mesh 24 made of wires extending longitudinally and transversely bonded together at the crossing points comprises a power-driven coiling mandrel 18 and an applicator device which presses the wire mesh inwards towards the coiling mandrel during the coiling operation, the applicator having at least one endless series of grippers 1 capable of travelling around an endless closed path the grippers projecting, along a part of the path, into the path of movement of the transverse wires of the wire mesh being coiled, with the result that the grippers are dragged along by the transverse wires, the grippers 1 having a device for restraining their movement around the path so that they act to tension the wire mesh as it is coiled. The grippers 1 may be provided by two or more endless hooked chains running over wheels 2, 3. The wheels 3 are carried by levers 5 pivoted, about shafts 4, to housings 7 and urged by a spring 6 to tension the chains 1. The housings 7 are pivoted and urged by springs 20 up towards the mandrel 18. The shafts 4 are mounted in levers 8 pivoted at 9 and urged by hydraulic means 17 towards the mandrel 18. The shaft 4, on which the wheels 2 are also mounted, serve to brake the rotation of the wheels 2, a sprocket 10 on each shaft 4 driving through a chain 11 an oil pump 13 pumping oil through a throttling valve. 15. Other braking means could be employed. The applicator may alternatively consist of a braked roller having grippers around its periphery.
