Abstract

Polymeric organic foams, e.g. polyurethanes, are reticulated in at least a portion of their cells by contacting for a short time at least one surface of a foam sheet with an open flame produced by a fuel gas/oxygen mixture containing only just enough fuel gas to be above the lower limit of flammability of the mixture, the temperature of the flame being above the autoignition temperature of the foam. A specified polymer is a polyester adipate polyurethane, which may have from 5-80 p.p.i. in the foam, and be contacted with an acetylene/oxygen flame from a 7:93 volume mixture. Contact time with the flame may be up to 100 millisec., usually 10-50 millisec. Polyester polyurethanes based on castor oil carbonate and polyether polyurethanes based on polyols are also mentioned.
