Abstract

1,100,532. Filter element. EVANS, ADLARD & CO. Ltd. 19 Aug., 1964 [22 May, 1963], No. 20305/63. Heading B1T. [Also in Division B5] A gas filter comprises a woven, nylon, mesh former (Fig. 5, not shown) having concentric corrugations, on which is deposited a porous layer of randomly oriented fibres. The fibres may be glass, of 0.5-3 microns diameter and sufficiently short not to bridge the corrugations. Other suitable fibres are ceramic, vegetable or synthetic plastics. The former may have a stiffening coating of phenolic resin and an edge-sealing layer of polyvinyl chloride. Fig. 9 shows a former having 6 concentric corrugations round a flat central panel 27 and a smaller former 28 positioned within the panel, prior to depositing the fibres. In manufacture, the former is pressed between two dies (Fig. 2, not shown), the upper one comprising concentric rings which act on the former in order of increasing diameter. The former is annealed while locked between the closed dies. The stiffening resin may be applied before pressing, and itself be cured in the annealing step, or it may be applied after the former is removed from the dies, necessitating an extra, curing, heat treatment. The former(s) is then placed in a duct (Fig. 6, not shown) through which is passed a suspension of fibres in an acid solution, and a gelatinous layer is formed (by the acid) on the fibres so that they adhere together and to the former(s). A former which is not resin-coated may be radially stretched during the fibre depositing step and then allowed to resiliently close up to the desired shape. The filter is for use in respiration, e.g. a gas mask. Corrugation peaks may be more blunt on the coated side, and formed thus by beaded die rings (Fig. 4, not shown).
