Abstract

110,050. Davies, S. Nov. 21, 1916. Coating-machines. - Relates to apparatus for coating fabrics &c. in web or sheet form, of the type wherein the fabric &c. is carried on an endless band beneath the trough containing the coating material which is delivered on to the fabric &c. through a slot in the trough, and consists in arranging the trough so as to bear upon the fabric &c. to be coated. An endless band 4 is arranged to run over rollers 2 and 6, the latter of which is mounted in sliding bearing blocks 7 urged downwardly by springs 8. A trough 11 for containing the coating material is carried on pivoted arms 12 and is caused to bear upon the travelling band by springs 13. A roller 5 carried in the bearing blocks 7 may be employed on the feed side of the trough so that the pressure thereof causes the travelling band 4 to be deflected inwards. The trough 11 has scrapers 14, 15 extending along either side of the slot in its base and is provided with an adjustable partition 11<a> for varying the width of fabric &c. coated. A trough 16 having a scraper 18 is carried by pivoted arms 17 and serves, when the rotation of the machine is reversed, to remove coating material that may get on to the travelling band 4 after the end of the fabric &c. has passed the trough 11, Before coating, the fabric &c. is dressed by treating its surface with pumice or like abrasive material. A detachable dressing device is shown comprising a base 19 on which is mounted transverse bars of pumice &c., 22, and a hinged cover 20 carrying rollers 23 which, when the cover is turned down, cause the fabric &c. to travel sinuously over the pumice &c. bars. Clips 24 provided with a number of holes 24<a> serve to secure the cover adjustably in its closed position. Sheets of fabric &c. may be fed into the machine by placing the leading edge of the sheet to be introduced beneath the rearward edge of the sheet which is about to leave the machine.
