Abstract

A record web feeding mechanism comprises an elongated transversely flexible track for guiding the feeding movement of the web, means for selectively advancing and retracting the track away from a work station and means for feeding the record material along the track. As shown in Fig. 4, the web T, which runs perpendicular to the paper is guided in a track comprising a base 21 having at its edges narrow strips 22 overlying the web T. In an alternative form (Fig. 12) the whole of the track is made from plastics material the base being reinforced by springy metal. For easing the passage of the web the base may carry a distinct layer of polytetrafluorethylene, or it and the contacting surfaces 22 may be coated with this material. As shown in Fig. 2, the web and track are mounted within two concentric shells 11, 12 the whole assembly being mounted on a pivot 36 and urged upwardly by spring 37. The web T is unwound from a spool 6 and enters the track at a point just before the track passes through a hole in the inner shell 11. The track is riveted at this point, 26, and then passes along the annular space between the shells 11, 12 before emerging from a hole 27 in the latter. The track then passes under guide means 44 along a work table 2 to the roller 3 of a rotary printing machine or a reciprocatory printer (Fig. 3). The web is fed along the track by a roller 51 which is in contact with the web in the working position. When printing takes place a cam operated lever 60 rocks the shell assembly away from the roller 51 so that web feed is effected solely by roller 3. The track can also be moved to the non-operative position if the button 41 is moved partially to the right to depress the shell assembly sufficiently to disengage the web from the feed roller 51. The inner shell is then rotated to withdraw the track into the annular space between the shells. A full movement of the knob 41 further depresses the shells to allow a door 34 to close to provide a continuous working surface for other types of printing.
