Abstract

Detergent compositions comprise at least one germicidal benzoazinedione of the general formula <FORM:1099865/C4-C5/1> wherein X and X1 are chlorine, bromine, iodine or a trifluoromethyl radical, n is an integer from 0 to 3, subject to the proviso that X or X1 represent at least one and not more than two trifluoromethyl radicals, Y is sulphur or oxygen and Z is sulphur or carbon, together with a soap and/or detergent. As the detergent ingredient are specified cationic detergents, such as dimethyl stearamidopropyl-2-hydroxy-ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, anionic detergents such as alkali metal soaps of hydrolysed natural or synthetic glycerides of fatty and similar acids, ampholytic detergents, such as polyoxypropylene polyoxyethylene condensates, and natural detergents such as starches, vegetable gums and mixtures thereof. The total weight of the benzoazinediones of the above general formula in the compositions is preferably from 0.001 to 5.0 per cent of the total weight of the composition.ALSO:Novel benzoazinediones of the general formula <FORM:1099865/C2/1> wherein X and X1 are chlorine, bromine, iodine or trifluoromethyl, n is an integer from 0 to 3, subject to the proviso that X or X1 represent at least one and not more than two trifluoromethyl groups, Y is sulphur or oxygen and Z is sulphur or carbon, are prepared by reaction of a substituted acetylanilide with thionyl chloride, phosgene or ethyl chloroformate. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise at least one benzoazinedione of the above general formula in admixture with an inert pharmaceutical diluent.ALSO:Paper pulp is sanitized by impregnation of germicidal benzoazinediones of the general formula:- <FORM:1099865/D1-D2/1> wherein X and X1 are chlorine, bromine, iodine or a trifluoromethyl group, n is an integer from 0 to 3, subject to the proviso that X or X1 represent at least one and not more than two trifluoromethyl groups, Y is sulphur or oxygen and Z is sulphur or carbon. The total weight of said benzoazinediones is preferably from 0.01 to 0.5 per cent of the total weight of the impregnated material.ALSO:Fibrous materials such as cotton gauze, dressings, textiles and paper pulp are sanitized by impregnation of germicidal benzoazinediones of the general formula <FORM:1099865/A5-A6/1> wherein X and X1 are chlorine, bromine, iodine, or a trifluoromethyl group, n is an integer from 0 to 3, subject to the proviso that X or X1 represent at least one and not more than two trifluoromethyl groups, Y is sulphur or oxygen and Z is sulphur or carbon. The total weight of said benzoazinediones is preferably from 0.01 to 0.5 per cent. of the total weight of the impregnated material.
