[Also in Division D1] An article, e.g. a garment, of plastics sheet or film material is manufactured so that it can be elastically stretched along one or more areas by welding at least one strip 4 of elastically stretchable plastics material in an elastically stretched state and along at least one of its longitudinal edges to the adjacent plastics material of the article so that when the stretching force is released the material will be pleated or gathered in said area(s). To form baby pants, parts 1, 2 are cut and welded to an under-layer 3 which comes between the legs. The strip 4 is stretched and laid on the parts 1, 2 and the underlayer 3, a flap 5 is turned to overlie the strip 4 and the whole assembly is welded. Finally, the ends of the strip 4 are released.
