A mat cutting machine comprises a belt feeder 35 for feeding a mat 25 towards a cutter 76 which severs the mat into pad portions 77 e.g. for sanitary napkins, means being provided for moving the cutter into and out of severing relation to the mat, the feeder 35 comprising belts 38, 39 constantly driven to feed the mat towards the cutter, and the feeder 35 having a carrier 37 which is driven by a reciprocator alternately to move it away from the cutter at substantially the same speed as the belts 38, 39 tend to advance the mat towards the cutter, thereby to hold the mat stationary with respect to the cutter, and to move it towards the cutter, thereby to advance the mat past the cutter at a speed in excess of belt speed, the carrier reciprocator and cutter moving means being operable in timed relationship from respective cams 72, 96 on a cam shaft 74. The mat is supplied to the feeder 35 by means of a continuously-driven conveyer 24, slack 75 being created when the mat is held stationary with respect to the cutter and the slack being taken up when the mat is advanced past the cutter. A stripper plate 99 is clamped to the mat when it is held stationary with respect to the cutter, by means operable from a cam 113 on the cam shaft 74. The cutter comprises two motor-driven disc blades or saws 80 which are oppositely inclined to the direction of mat travel. In a modification, the cutter comprises a single blade 123, Fig. 16, and notching dies 149, 150 which are operable concurrently with the blade so as to produce tapered pads 78. In another modification, the cutter comprises two blades 123, Fig. 17, and notching dies 169 to produce parallel-sided pads 79. In each reciprocation of the carrier 37, the mat is advanced a distance 172, Fig. 16, equal to the width of a pad portion when a single cutter blade is provided or a distance 171, Fig. 17 or 170, Fig. 18, equal to twice the width of a pad portion when two cutter blades are provided.
