Abstract

1,099,402. Disc brakes. DOWTY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. March 12, 1965 [March 14, 1964], No. 10912/64. Headings F2E and F2F. A spot-type disc brake comprises at least one piston-and-cylinder hydraulic device of the two-stage type in which an increased hydraulic pressure acting on a first-stage piston is generated by a second-stage differential piston. As shown, brake pads 14, 15 are moved into contact with a brake disc 16 by hydraulic pressure from a master cylinder 36 acting on first-stage pistons 17 against tension springs 20. At low pressures, the hydraulic fluid passes directly to spaces 25 behind the first pistons through passages 33, 34, past ball valves 28 which are held open by rods 29 secured to a common casing 18, and through bores 26 in second-stage pistons 21. When the pressure increases further the second-stage pistons are deflected against compression springs 30, enabling springs 31 to close the ball valves, thus interrupting the direct fluid connection between the master cylinder and the spaces 25. Further increase in fluid pressure moves the second-stage pistons 21 further inwards, moving piston-rods 23 into the spaces 25 and thereby the pressure in the spaces 25 to increase more rapidly than the master cylinder pressure due to the difference in area between each piston 21 and its piston-rod 23. In another embodiment (not shown), a single piston and cylinder may operate a floating-calliper type of disc brake.
