Abstract

A preformed absorbent product for absorbing body fluids, e.g a dental packing, dressing, tampon or sanitary napkin, comprises as the fluid-adsorbing and retaining means a preformed body of non-woven water-insoluble cellulosic fibres movable with respect to each other to vary the size of the interstices between fibres, the cellulosic fibres having been cross-linked in the wet state, i.e. in the swollen state, so that the preformed body of fibres is resistant to deformation by externally applied pressures. The cellulosic fibres may be cotton, wood pulp or regenerated cellulose fibres including crimped viscose rayon fibres and the cross-linking agent may be formaldehyde, dichloroacetic acid, 1,3-dichloropropanol-2, a diepoxide, e.g. butadiene diepoxide, N-methyolacrylamide or divinyl sulphone. The cross-linking may be effected in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, e.g. sodium hydroxide, or an acid catalyst, e.g. sulphuric or hydrochloric acid. The absorbent articles may comprise wet cross-linked fibres alone or in admixture with other natural or synthetic fibres, e.g. cotton, flax, jute, viscose rayon, cellulose acetate, nylon, acrylic or polyester fibres.ALSO:A preformed absorbent product for absorbing body fluids, e.g a dental packing, dressing, tampon or sanitary napkin, comprises as the fluid-absorbing and retaining means a preformed body of non-woven water-insoluble cellulosic fibres movable with respect to each other to vary the size of the interstices between fibres, the cellulosic fibres having been cross-linked in the wet state, i.e. in the swollen state, so that the preformed body of fibres is resistant to deformation by externally applied pressures.
