Abstract

The invention relates to halogen- and methylsubstituted phenyl N-methyl carbamates of the general formula <FORM:1099084/C2/1> where R1 is a hydrogen atom or methyl radical; when R1 is hydrogen, X is a halogen atom or a methyl radical, R and R11 are a hydrogen atom or halogen atom and R may also be a methyl radical, but X, R and R11 should be different from each other in each compound, and when R1 is methyl, X is a halogen atom, R is methyl and R11 is hydrogen atom. Compounds claimed per se are 2-chloro-3-methylphenyl-, 2-bromo-3-methylphenyl-, 2-chloro-3,4-dimethylphenyl-, and 2-bromo-3,4-dimethylphenyl N-methylcarbamates. The compounds may be prepared by reacting the corresponding substituted phenol with methyl isocyanate or with phosgene to give the corresponding chloroformate which is then reacted with monomethyl amine. Many examples are given.ALSO:Insecticidal compositions comprise as active ingredients at least one halogen- or methyl-substituted phenyl N-methyl carbamate of the general formula: <FORM:1099084/A5-A6/1> in which R\sv is a hydrogen atom or methyl radical; when R\sv is hydrogen, X is a halogen atom or a methyl radical, R and R\yF are a hydrogen atom or halogen atom and R may also be a methyl radical, but X, R and R\yF should be different from each other in each compound and when R\sv is methyl, X is a halogen atom, R is a methyl radical and R\yF is hydrogen atom, together with a solid or liquid inert diluent. The composition may be in granular or pellet form, solutions or emulsions and may include other insecticides, e.g. parathion, tetraethyl pyrophosphate; DDT, BHC, 1-naphthyl N-methylcarbamate, and natural insecticides such as rotenone and pyrethrin; or fungicides, e.g. dithio-carbamic acid salts or their derivatives, phenyl mercuric acetate, phenyl mercuric iodide and cadmium compounds; or herbicides, e.g. pentachlorophenol or its sodium salt, urea-type herbicides, carbamate-type herbicides, phenoxy-type herbicides, triazine-type herbicides; or plant growth regulating agents and fertilisers. Among many specified active ingredients are the 2-chloro-3-methyl 1; 2-bromo-3-methyl and 2-methyl-5-iodo-phenyl N-methyl carbamates.
