Abstract

1,098,919. Diving suits. LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc. Sept. 12, 1966 [Sept. 10, 1965], No. 40737/66. Heading B7U. A flexible joint for low pressure diving suits comprises one or more groups of segments, each group comprising three ring-shaped spherical segments such as 18, 16, 14 of increasing diameter, the segments being mounted for relative pivoting motion (via a pressure-resistant gear train and roller assembly 29) so as to provide a variable overlapping relationship between adjacent segments, the intermediate segment 16 having internal and external surfaces 16B, 16A which are spherical with respect to different centres of curvature (17 and 15 respectively), the internal surface 16B of the intermediate segment overlapping the external surface of the adjacent segment 18 of smaller diameter by virtue of a pivotal connection about the centre of curvature 17 of said internal surface 16B and the external surface 16A of the intermediate segment being overlapped by the internal surface of the adjacent segment 14 of larger diameter by virtue of a pivotal connection about the centre of curvature 15 of said external surface. A sheet of flexible material 24 covers the external surfaces of the segments to seal the interstices between them.
