Abstract
109,858. Valentine, H. S. Oct. 19, 1916. Projectiles; projectile fuses.-Consists in providing a timefuse grenade with frictional contact igniting-means operated by spring mechanism arranged within the grenade body. In the grenade shown in Fig. 1, the fuse-length e, tipped with sulphur or the like, is surrounded by one or more springs f acting upon a sleeve j. When a safety-pin m is pulled out, the sleeve, which is preferably roughened externally, is forced upwards by the spring f, and ignites match-heads l by friction. Several devices for securing the .match-heads in position are described. A plug h has an extension i which prevents displacement of the fuse e. The detonator d may be supported by an extension of the bottom plug. The igniting- mechanism may be modified so that a spring in tension instead of in compression may be used. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the igniting- mechanism is in a side chamber cast in one with the main body a of the grenade which is approximately elliptical in cross-section. In this construction, the sleeve is dispensed with, the spring f igniting the match heads directly. The fuse e and detonator a are, in a further modification, arranged in a recess in the wall D between the two chambers
