Abstract

Scale is prevented from forming on a surface e.g. the tubes of a heat exchanger by causing a liquid, e.g. water or tetrachlorodiphenyl, to flow over the surface, thus preventing the scale forming liquid from contacting the surface. The liquid is removed from the surface laterally. A cock either at the top or bottom of the apparatus, depending on the density of the protective liquid, allows any of the liquid which collects in the apparatus to be removed.
