Abstract
A high density magnetic storage device having a coercivity characteristic greater than 300 oersteds a square hysteresis loop and a high flux density coating is made by electrolessly codepositing a layer of magnetic material and zinc on to a non-magnetic substrate. The layer, e.g. Zn and Co or Co/Ni alloy, can be deposited from a solution which contains Zn ions, Co ions with or without Ni ions, hypophosphite ions and a buffer. The substrate can be Cu, brass or non-conductive material, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate or glass. The substrate can be catalytically activated e.g. by immersion in a SnCl2 and/or PdCl2 soln.
