Abstract
1,098,252. Fluid cushion conveyers; slipways; vehicles guided and supported by gaseous cushions. SOCIETE BERTIN & CIE. Jan. 4, 1965 [Jan. 2, 1964], No. 227/65. Headings B7K, B7L and B7S. A conveyer, e.g. for ships, comprises a platform 1 supported on a track 2 by a liquid cushion contained by skirts 11 fixed to the platform or the track. As described, the track is inclined to form a ship lift, the ship either floating on water carried by the platform, or resting on inflatable bags. In one embodiment, a plate carried by the platform extends into an inclined gutter 5 running alongside the track to form a moving dam, allowing water to be withdrawn by a pump 6 for supply through passages 8 to the cushions. The. pump may be driven by a heat engine 7, or by an electric motor supplied from an overhead cable. The platform is propelled by rack and pinion drive 14, 16, and has abutments (10, Fig. 4, not shown) to support it when the cushions are not pressurized. In another embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) water under pressure is supplied to valves (18) in the track, each surrounded by skirts (10a) and opened by contact with the platform passing over them to permit the water to form a cushion beneath the platform. Where the track changes in slope, the platform may have pivotally mounted fluid cushion "bogies" (Figs. 10 and 11, not shown).
