Abstract

1,098,185. Dynamo-electric machines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. April 9, 1965 [April 14, 1964], No. 15402/64. Heading H2A. In an alternator of the type in which a rotating field winding 14 is excited by an auxiliary alternator 11, using rectifiers 16 mounted on the common shaft, the stator 15 of the main alternator has an odd number of phases (greater than 3) and its output is rectified at 17. The use of more than three phases is stated to result in an unexpected reduction in the ripple in the rectified D.C. output, apparently due to the effect of reduction of armature leakage reactance. The auxiliary alternator has a stationary field system 13 and preferably a three phase rotor 11.
